I probably hear this phrase at every other photo shoot. Sometimes right when I walk in. Sometimes not until after the first few shots. And to be honest: that’s often exactly what produces the most powerful photos.

Many people believe they have to look perfect in front of the camera. They think of models, staged poses, or uncomfortable situations from the past. Bad cell phone photos. Stiff headshot photos. Or simply that feeling: “I never look good in photos.”

But most of the time, the problem isn’t the person at all. Most people aren’t unphotogenic. They’re just self-conscious in front of the camera.

That’s exactly why, for me, a good photo shoot doesn’t start with technique. It starts with atmosphere. With calm. With conversation. With the feeling that you’re allowed to settle in first.

I often notice after just a few minutes how their body language becomes more relaxed. Their shoulders relax. Their smile becomes more genuine. Their gaze becomes calmer.

And then, at some point, there comes that moment when customers look at the pictures and suddenly say, “Wait a minute… that really is me.”

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. It’s not about perfect people. It’s about making a real impact. It’s about personality. It’s about images in which you can recognize yourself.
